Official Lionfish Removal Awareness Day

Official Lionfish Removal Awareness Day

The Florida House of Representatives has designated May 16, 2015 as the start of “Lionfish Removal & Awareness Day”. Through education and research, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will encourage extra effort from the public to remove Lionfish from Florida waters. With our headquarters being located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this is a cause that is very important to us.

Lionfish are invasive, nonnative species that have proven to have a negative impact on Florida’s native wildlife and reef habitats. With the help of consistent Lionfish removal, we can reduce the negative impacts that Lionfish bring to the Florida reef community.

The FWC has planned several activites for the weekend of the first annual Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day. On May 16th, divers across the state of Florida will be encouraged to see how many Lionfish can be removed from Florida waters in one weekend. Divers can report their catches via MyFWC.com/lionfish.
